The Southern Youth Choir Story

New members can expect a structured environment focused on improving four-part choral abilities through regular practice and local performances. The Southern Youth Choir was formed in 1992 and primarily attracts young singers aged 16-25, many of whom are University of Otago students. With approximately 65 members, the choir maintains a steady group size that supports collaborative learning and performance preparation. Since 2020, conductor John Buchanan MNZM has led the ensemble, guiding singers through repertoire that builds technical skills and ensemble awareness.

Finding Southern Youth Choir

The choir is based in Dunedin North, Dunedin, Otago, which provides convenient access for university students and local youth. Rehearsals are held at All Saints' Church on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.30pm during semester time. This central location within the city supports consistent attendance and allows members to balance choir commitments with studies and other activities. The setting in Otago suits the group's focus on local performances and community engagement.

Joining Southern Youth Choir

Recruitment occurs through university clubs days and similar events, making the choir open to eligible youth singers who meet the age criteria. Those interested can attend rehearsals during the semester to experience the sessions firsthand. The emphasis remains on skill development in choral music within a group of like-minded participants.
