Thames Amateur Radio Transmitters
The club is officially the Thames Branch of the NZ Amateur Radio Transmitters. The over-all object is to encourage interest in amateur radio with meetings, training, conferences and publications etc. Locally we few in number, elderly and this year have met formally only twice. However, we have a weekly club net and chat on the radio and keep contact going. I can’t pretend we are thriving and clearly there are reasons with modern communication why there is limited interest in the hobby.. However the government recognizes that the hobby is a valuable resource. Think of areas like search and rescue, earthquakes wiping out cell towers etc. Amateur radio has its own radio frequencies that can only be used by licensed amateurs. There are no limits for association with the club but basically getting licensed with a call sign is the only way to become an active member. There is no subscription at the present time.
