Tramping trips form the heart of the Otago Tramping & Mountaineering Club, with sessions running as day outings most Sundays and occasional Saturdays, catering to all grades for a balanced experience. Formed in 1923, the club began with local walks around Dunedin but expanded to further destinations as transport improved. Weekend trips now reach National Parks such as Mt. Aspiring, Fiordland, and Aoraki / Mt. Cook, alongside areas like Ohau, Ahuriri, Danseys Pass, and the Catlins. Longer breaks like Easter, Kings/Queens Birthday, and Labour weekends allow ventures deeper into the wilderness.

Beyond tramping, the club organises diverse activities including snowcaving and kayaking, reflecting its evolution—renamed in 1971 to embrace mountaineering aspirations. With around 150 members from varied backgrounds, the social aspect thrives through weekly Thursday evening meetings at the clubrooms, starting informally at 7.00pm and formally at 7.30pm. These gatherings feature organised speakers on outdoor topics, making them an ideal entry point. Non-members are welcome on trips and meetings; prospective members simply need to join two club trips or complete the Bushcraft course to qualify.

This location supports convenient access to nearby tramping areas, from local Dunedin trails to weekend escapes in surrounding wilderness. The clubrooms offer a comfortable space for weekly meetings and planning, fostering community amid Otago's rugged terrain and natural beauty. Whether starting with a short day trip or gearing up for a National Park adventure, the setup ensures practical facilities for gearing up and sharing experiences in this outdoor paradise.
