Jungshin Taekwon-Do: The Club Experience
At Jungshin Taekwon-Do, expert instruction from experienced coaches like Vince and Shirley Pygott provides comprehensive support for students seeking to develop both physical prowess and mental strength through Taekwon-Do. Founded in February 1991 as Hibiscus Coast Taekwon-Do, the club emphasises the full essence of this martial art, where physical techniques are complemented by mental training. The name change to Jungshin Taekwon-Do in 2002 reflects this philosophy, drawing from the Korean term "Jungshin," which translates to mentality, spirituality, and mind, as noted in the Encyclopaedia of Taekwon-Do and aligned with its core tenets.
Starting with small classes at Silverdale Community Hall, the club expanded rapidly by 1994, leading to relocations that shaped its resilient history. In 1995, it moved to Dairy Flat Primary School, then to Red Beach Primary School in 1998, where it remains today. Temporary shifts, such as to Orewa College in 2004, tested the community, but returns in 2005 solidified its base. Mini-Kids classes began in 2008 at Red Beach and Stanmore Bay locations, alongside ongoing kids' programs, making Taekwon-Do accessible for young learners building foundational skills in discipline and focus.
From this core, several affiliated clubs emerged, showcasing the club's influence in Auckland's Taekwon-Do scene. Jungshin Stanmore Bay opened in 1996 at Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre, focusing on kids and producing standout students. Jungshin Rosmini launched in 2002 for Rosmini College pupils, thriving until 2014. Glenfield joined as the third Jungshin club in 2006 under Vince Pygott's guidance, evolving through instructors like Matthew Davey and venues from Windy Ridge Primary to its current spot at Glenfield College. Other ventures, including Whangaparaoa in 2008, Shore Kids (later Jungshin Long Bay) in 2010, a Kristin School program until 2018, and Warkworth restarted in 2018, highlight the club's branching growth and commitment to spreading Taekwon-Do training across communities.
