Coastguard Wānaka Lakes: The Club Experience

Coastguard Wānaka Lakes is a volunteer-driven unit focused on keeping people safe on the water. Members value the sense of purpose that comes from providing reliable marine search and rescue services across Lakes Wānaka and Hawea. The club operates around the clock with a team of approximately 20 volunteers who respond to emergencies and maintain high standards of training. Many appreciate the strong camaraderie built through regular weekly meetings and the satisfaction of contributing to local safety on the lakes.

Where It All Happens

The club is based in Wānaka, Otago, at the dedicated Marine Rescue Centre located at Eely Point. This central lakeside facility makes it straightforward for volunteers to gather, train, and launch operations. The centre, opened in 2022, serves as the hub for all activities, with easy access for those in the Wānaka area who wish to get involved.

Coastguard Wānaka Lakes in the Community

Formed from local LandSAR efforts in 2010 and becoming an official Coastguard unit in 2011, the club plays a steady role in supporting lake users. In 2022 it welcomed the new CRV 'Waiariki Rescue', enhancing its capability on the water.
